Triumph Speed Twin 1200 RS: our tuner’s opinion

TRIUMPH SPEED TWIN 1200 RS: OUR OPINION

The Triumph Speed Twin 1200 RS, which recently arrived in our hands, arouses both enthusiasm and curiosity. With its sharp looks, iconic engine and top-of-the-range standard equipment, this RS version of the Triumph Speed Twin 1200 RS takes the concept of the dynamic neo-retro roadster even further. At FCR Original, we took the time to examine it from every angle: design, technical, riding. Here’s our team’s take on this promising base – a bike we already see as an excellent candidate for transformation… or simply to enjoy as is.

A sharp, well-born roadster

The Speed Twin 1200 RS reinforces Triumph’s Modern Classics range with a sportier orientation. The 1200 cm³ parallel twin develops 105 hp and, above all, 112 Nm of torque from 4,250 rpm, offering a full, smooth power curve, perfect for committed riding.

The on-board electronics are up to the task:

Cruise control, handy for longer journeys.

Three driving modes: Road, Rain, Sport, each influencing throttle response, ABS and traction control.

Hybrid instrument panel: a classic LCD screen combined with a clear, customizable color TFT.

Bluetooth connectivity via My Triumph module (optional), enabling navigation, music and phone management.

Triumph Shift Assist shifter (up only), for clutchless upshifting.

The eye of the design office: a balanced, dynamic design

From a design point of view, the RS is a success. The FCR Original team describes it as a dress roadster: visually dynamic, almost aggressive with its plunging front end, but without ever betraying the neo-retro DNA of the Speed Twin. There’s harmony between the volumes, with a very exposed engine and a well-integrated intake.

The materials are clearly premium: brushed aluminum on the mudguards, headlight cladding and side covers, lacquered black accents on the crankcase. The pearlescent orange color is one of our favorites, with its vibrant, contemporary look.

The small RS logo, discreet but well placed, underlines the whole. For us, this bike is an excellent basis on which to work – and our ideas are already moving towards an even sleeker, more refined design, while respecting its dynamic spirit.

Workshop analysis: well-equipped, ready to roll

On the technical side, feedback from the workshop was very positive.
The Triumph shifter is fluid and efficient, and contributes to the feeling of sportiness. But it’s the cycle components that really stand out:

  • Fully adjustable Öhlins rear suspension, a rarity on a production machine.
  • Marzocchi 43 mm upside-down front forks, also adjustable.
  • Brembo Stylema M4.30 radial calipers for powerful, progressive braking.
  • Metzeler Racetec RR K3 tires, with impressive grip.

Add to this an open-work fork crown, an aluminum swingarm to lighten the rear end, and controls taken from the Trident, and it’s clear that this RS is aiming for a high level of finish.

The only drawback is the plastic chain guard, which is out of sync with the rest. A detail that can easily be modified in preparation.

Feedback: a fun, agile and playful roadster

Team members who have ridden the RS confirm the overall feeling: it’s a very well-built bike.

  • The engine has character: supple at low revs, expressive and playful at higher revs, especially in Sport mode.
  • Sport mode clearly modifies behavior: more direct response, less electronic assistance, enhanced feel.
  • Rain mode makes the bike very predictable and smooth, perfect for rough conditions.
  • Road mode is the ideal compromise between liveliness and safety.

The riding position is natural and well thought-out for everyday use. The seat, a little firm, remains consistent with the roadster style. It could be revised for greater comfort or aesthetics, depending on our future preparations.

The front end inspires confidence, the braking is crisp, and the handling in curves makes you want to pick up the pace.

In short: a fun, agile, well-balanced bike.
